Prime Minister Dr. Nsengiyumva Justin has urged communities living around Volcanoes National Park to make the most of the infrastructure surrounding the park, as well as the various development projects provided to improve their livelihoods.
He delivered this message on Friday, September 5, 2025, in Kinigi, Musanze District, during the Kwita Izina ceremony, where 40 baby gorillas were named.
The event brought together around 10,000 people, including local residents and visitors from across the world who had come to take part in the celebration.
Prime Minister Dr. Nsengiyumva Justin explained that in Rwandan culture, naming a child is not just a routine act it is a gesture of love, commitment, and hope shared with friends and family who play a role in shaping the child’s future.
He emphasized that the Kwita Izina ceremony is also an opportunity to thank all the communities living around Rwanda’s national parks for their efforts in protecting the environment.
He specifically expressed gratitude to the communities around Volcanoes National Park, recognizing them as key partners in conservation efforts, including protecting the mountain gorillas that have brought everyone together for this occasion.
Dr. Nsengiyumva noted that the government is encouraging local communities to take full advantage of the infrastructure developed for them.
“The government urges you to continue utilizing the infrastructure surrounding the park and the development projects aimed at improving your wellbeing. Always remember that these gorillas are a highly valuable national treasure that we all must protect.”. He spoke.
He also called on communities around the park to maintain their warm hospitality toward visitors who come to see the gorillas and explore areas near the park.
Lastly, he encouraged international guests attending the ceremony to become ambassadors for Rwanda when they return to their home countries, by sharing what they’ve witnessed and advocating for the continued protection of biodiversity.
