For decades, sport has been celebrated for its ability to unite people, inspire excellence, and foster social change. It has helped break barriers, promote public health, champion gender equality, and bring communities together around shared goals. Today, it is being recognized for another important role helping societies understand and respond to the climate crisis.

As Rwanda continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience, experts are beginning to view sport as a powerful ally in promoting environmental awareness and encouraging citizens to take action.

Juliet Kabera, Director General of the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), highlighted the power of sport in driving Climate action .

We realized that working with sports teams can significantly contribute to environmental awareness. That is why we signed a partnership agreement with the Rwanda Volleyball Federation, so that environmental messages can be integrated into different competitions. We want athletes themselves to understand the importance of protecting the environment because they influence many people, especially young people, who often listen to and follow their example,” she said.

These remarks were made during the final whistle echoed across the volleyball court in Gisagara District, players from Police VC celebrated a hard-fought victory over REG VC to win the inaugural Climate Action Volleyball Tournament 2026, From 29 -30 May .While the competition delivered excitement and sporting excellence, the real victory extended far beyond the scoreboard.

The initiative reflects a growing global recognition that sports can play a significant role in addressing climate change. Sporting events attract large audiences and influential personalities, creating opportunities to educate communities about environmental challenges while encouraging sustainable behaviors.

In Rwanda, where climate change continues to affect agriculture, water resources, and livelihoods, raising awareness has become increasingly important. By linking environmental campaigns with sports, organizers hope to engage audiences that might not normally participate in conservation discussions.
