The Minister of Public Service and Labour, Amb. Christine Nkulikiyinka, has announced that by June 2025, more than 852,000 public and private sector workers have registered and begun contributing to pension and occupational risk insurance schemes.

Minister Nkulikiyinka made this statement on Monday, October 20, 2025, emphasizing that the expansion of employee insurance coverage aims to promote workers’ welfare and protect them from work-related risks and the challenges of old age.

“Including all workers in insurance schemes is a significant step in protecting their rights and helping them secure a better future, whether in times of hardship or during retirement.” She stated.

The Minister added that Rwanda’s Social Security Board (RSSB) is actively working to enroll private sector employees and self-employed individuals in these schemes, with the goal of leaving no employer or worker behind.

Social welfare experts believe that this initiative will help reduce the number of elderly people without financial means to support themselves, while also contributing to national investment through worker contributions.

In addition to pension insurance, workers are also covered by other insurance schemes that address workplace risks, including accidents, occupational diseases, and other work-related hazards.

The Ministry of Public Service and Labour continues to encourage all workers to take part in insurance programs, in line with the country’s broader goal of building a sustainable economy rooted in the well-being of all citizens.
