As the world confronts the growing threat of climate change and pollution, the need for sustainable transportation has never been more urgent. In Rwanda, a country known for its commitment to environmental sustainability, Spiro has emerged as a key player in transforming urban mobility.
Through its affordable electric motorbikes, Spiro is not only cutting down harmful gas emissions but also making green transport accessible to the Rwandans. This innovation marks a significant step toward a cleaner, and more inclusive future in align with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 development plan, which emphasizes on green growth and climate resilience.
Traditional motorbikes that run on petrol or diesel release carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and other pollutants into the atmosphere. These emissions contribute to climate change, respiratory illnesses, and poor air quality, especially in densely populated urban areas like Kigali.
Kaushik Burman, the CEO of SPIRO stated that the Spiro’s electric motorbikes offer a powerful solution, by running entirely on electricity.
“These bikes emit no tailpipe gases, they help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality for the country like Rwanda, which is striving to meet its climate goals under the Paris Agreement, replacing fuel-based motorcycles with electric ones is a major win.”
Kaushik went on saying that one of the biggest challenges in adopting electric vehicles (EVs) in Africa has been affordability but Spiro tackles this head-on by providing electric motorbikes at affordable rates tailored to the local economy.
“Whether through direct purchase, lease-to-own models, or partnerships with local cooperatives, Spiro ensures that everyday Rwandan, especially moto-taxi drivers, can access clean transport options.”
This affordability allows more people to participate in the green economy, while also helping them save on fuel and maintenance costs. Electric bikes require less frequent servicing, no oil changes, and the cost of charging battery is significantly lower.
