In recent years, Rwanda has emerged as one of Africa’s most forward-looking countries in adopting artificial intelligence (AI) for development. As part of vision 2050, Rwanda’s long-term plan to build knowledge-based education and innovation driven economy, AI is increasingly being integrated into the education sector, reshaping how students learn and how educators teach.

A major milestone in Rwanda’s AI in education journey has been the rollout of national literacy program for teachers, in 2025 the Ministry of Education partnered with international organizations like MIT RAISE and Day of AI to train over 150 teachers from all districts in AI fundamentals, ethics and classroom integration .These master teachers returned to schools across the country to train peers and embed AI education at every level.

Beyond tools and trainings, Rwanda is actively integrating AI into its national school curriculum .While ICT has long been taught in schools, policymakers are reviewing curriculum to explicitly include AI concepts and applications .Those shift reflects a commitment to ensure students do not consume technology but understand and shape it.

Rwanda’s efforts to integrate AI into education reflect a broader ambition to become an AI ready nation. With strong government leadership, international partnership and grassroots innovations in classrooms, the country is building a foundation that empowers young learners to not only use AI tools but contribute to future technological advances.

During a Global AI Summit on Africa held in Rwanda from 3-4 April 2025, the Minister of ICT and Innovation Paula Ingabire highlighted  the use of AI and why it should be adapted as it has become a necessity

“AI is no longer a distant future, it is a present force revolutionalising healthcare, agriculture, financial services and education across Africa. As we gather here today we share the belief that AI can drive transformation if designed with purpose ,values and people at its core ,Africa is home to over 1 billion people ,2000 languages and the world’s youngest population and is the fastest growing continent, we stand at a defining moment ,AI is not just an opportunity ,it is a necessity. “She highlighted.

AI became popular around 2023 driven by explosion of generative AI tools like OpenAI’S Chat GPT, while AI, machine learning and neural networks were developed for decades prior, the release of ChatGPT in late 2022 and more advanced models in 2023 and 2024 brought AI capabilities into everyday’s life.

By early 2025, Rwanda’s AI adoption rate was approximately 6%, with projections to rise placing it behind top African AI contenders like South Africa and Kenya .AI is expected to contribute to economic growth, estimating that it could drive up to 5-6% of GDP.
