The Gisagara district leadership has revealed that the Nyiramugengeri power plant, after its completion, has become a major driver of economic growth and community development, providing employment to more than 800 local residents and paying a combined monthly salary of about 60 million Rwandan francs.
The facility, officially known as the Hakan Peat Plant, is located in Mamba Sector, Gisagara District. It generates electricity using peat as a source of energy and has been supplying power to Rwanda’s national grid since 2021.
Job Creation and Economic Boost
Although the number of employees has reduced from the early stages of operation, the plant continues to employ over 800 people from surrounding communities. The majority are peat extractors, while others work in different positions within the factory.
According to Gisagara district Mayor, Jérôme Rutaburingoga, the plant has not only created jobs but also contributed to the overall development of the area.
“The plant employs around 800 people, including peat miners and factory staff, who together earn about 60 million Rwandan francs every month. In addition, they support the Gisagara Volleyball Club through significant sponsorship. They have become a strong partner in the district’s development,” He stated.
The plant’s presence has also stimulated the local economy by increasing housing demand, boosting business opportunities, and creating more jobs in transportation and related services.

Community Development Initiatives
Beyond job creation, the factory has invested in social development projects that directly benefit the surrounding population. Among the most notable contributions are:
Construction of 40 houses for local families, Support to vulnerable households living near the factory and assistance to schools in the area to strengthen education infrastructure.
Mayor Rutaburingoga emphasized that these efforts have transformed Mamba Sector into a more vibrant community, with improved standards of living for the residents.
A Model Partnership
The Nyiramugengeri power plant stands out as an example of how energy investments can go beyond electricity production to make a lasting impact on local communities. Through steady job creation, infrastructure development, and sponsorship of social activities such as sports, the Hakan Peat Plant has positioned itself as one of Gisagara district’s most reliable partners in development.
